Green Eats

Greendining If you're like me, you are a little frustrated when it comes to finding more earth-friendly ways to eat out. I was pleasantly surprised when I recently found the Certified Green Restaurant™ Guide.

From the nice people at the Green Restaurant AssociationSM (GRA), a national non-profit organization that is helping the restaurant industry to become more environmentally sustainable, the Certified Green Restaurant™ Guide is a listing of the restaurants that meet the following qualifications:

  • Use a comprehensive recycling system for all products that are accepted by local recycling companies.
  • Free of polystyrene foam ("Styrofoam") products.
  • Commit to completing four Environmental Steps per year of membership.
  • Complete at least one Environmental Step after joining the GRA.

The listing also shows how many step an establishment has taken to be greener, so you can be as picky as you want to be when it comes to dining out. There are currently only a few places in my neck of the woods but I am hopeful that more will be added to the list soon.

So the next time you are planning to head out to eat with the family, search for a green restaurant near you for a more environmentally-friendly dining experience.
